Blog Entry #02
In July, 2016 we have seen escalated tensions between the police and the African-American community. Grievances have devolved to the killing of 9 officers in one month; 5 officers were killed in Dallas, 3 in Baton Rouge and 1 in San Diego.
The month started with a sniper attack that killed 5 police officers on July 7, 2016 at a protest in Dallas Texas. The protest was against recent police shootings of black suspects and was one of many protests being held that day in different cities across the nation. A 25 year old Dallas man who was angry with the police shot and killed 5 random officers and injuring several more. This was the worst attack on law enforcement since 9/11.
Then on July 17, 2016 two police officers and one sheriff’s deputy were killed in Baton Rouge when a black gunman ambushed them as they responded to a call for help. This gunman was also angry with the police and was later killed himself.
Lastly, on July 28, 2016 another officer is killed by a gunman while performing his duty. This shooting does not appear to be related to the racial tensions of the other two. It was just one more incident in a month with too many.
We should pray for the protection of all lives and for a peaceful resolution of differences between law enforcement and their community’s citizens. The issues that led gunmen to kill can be anything from unsolved grievances to mental illness. I’m not saying that prayer alone will solve the problem, but it can’t hurt. This picture of an officer and a black man praying together reminds us of the best way to begin to mend the wounds.
These are a few prayers for peace for law enforcement, fire fighters, the military and all those who provide safety and security to the public. I invite you to add your own or simply pray with us.
Prayer for Policemen
Catholic Online http://www.catholic.org/prayers/prayer.php?p=1717
O Almighty God, Whose great power and eternal wisdom embraces the universe,
Watch over all policemen and Law enforcement officers everywhere.
Protect them from harm in the performance of their duty to stop crime, robbery, riots and violence.
We pray, help them keep our streets and homes safe, day and night.
We commend them to your loving care because their duty is dangerous.
Grant them strength and courage in their daily assignments.
Dear God, protect these brave men and women.
Grant them your almighty protection, unite them safely with their families after duty has ended.
Please God, grant us this wish.
A Prayer of Blessing for Firefighters, Police Officers, Medical Workers, and All Who Serve Us in Times of Crisis
Blessed are you, Lord, God of mercy,
who through your Son
gave us a marvelous example of charity
and the great commandment of love for one another.
Send down your blessings on these your servants,
who so generously devote themselves to helping others.
Grant them courage when they are afraid,
wisdom when they must make quick decisions,
strength when they are weary,
and compassion in all their work.
When the alarm sounds
and they are called to aid both friend and stranger,
let them faithfully serve you in their neighbor.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
